Brief History

Czech immigrant Joseph Bulova established Bulova in 1875 as J. Bulova Company. The company was later renamed and reincorporated as the Bulova Watch Company in 1923. Bulova’s mission is to innovate timepieces. In 1912, the company opened its first plant solely dedicated to the mass production of watches, which was unheard of during that time. In 1919, Bulova introduced a wide range of women’s watches and men’s watches in 1924.

Bulova used a visually appealing advertising campaign which made its watches popular amongst Americans. And in 1927, Bulova put up an observatory on the roof of a building at 580 5th Avenue New York, NY, to ascertain the exact universal time.

Bulova, later on, established its operations in the towns of Woodside and Flushing in New York, where it made its innovations and produced watchmaking tools. It is where they developed the iconic Accutron watch, which is regulated by a tuning fork.

Japanese-owned Citizen Watch Company bought Bulova on January 10, 2008, for $250 million. Today, Bulova designs produces, and markets different watch brands such as Bulova, Caravelle, Wittnauer Swiss, and Marine Star. In 2014, the company stopped producing and selling Bulova watches like the Accutron and Accutron watches. However, in 2020 Bulova reintroduced the Accutron line.
