History

Swatch is a Swiss watchmaker established in 1983 by Elmar Mock, Ernst Thomke, and Jacques Müller. It is part of the conglomerate The Swatch Group—a manufacturer of watches and jewelry. It was originally established to retake entry-level market shares lost by Swiss watchmakers to Japanese watchmakers in the 1960s and 1970s. And to re-invigorate interest in analog watches amidst the rise in digital watches. 

Jacques Irniger, a marketing expert who used to work cor Colgate and Nestlé, was hired to launch Swatch in 1983. Swatch soon proved to be a success, eventually opening around 60 stores worldwide in 1997.

During its launch, Swatch introduced 12 models in its collection. The price ranged from 39.90 to CHF 49.90 but was eventually standardized to CHF 50.00 in the fall of the same year. Swatched also had an aggressive approach in its marketing, and coupled with budget-friendly prices, its sales skyrocketed.
